About UsThe Tennis Club Hale Barns The club is situated in Chapel Lane, Hale Barns. There are 5 astra-turf courts, one of which is floodlit. The club was established in 1924 and the grounds were purchased by the club’s founder members in 1938 when land was cheap and Chapel Lane very much under-developed. A Limited Company, called Hale Barns Tennis Club Limited, was formed and the purchase price raised by issuing shares to the founder members. The grounds were then leased for a term to a Members’ Club called The Tennis Club Hale Barns and rent paid to the Limited Company . The club’s lease had to be taken in the names of the duly appointed trustees who were club members (usually Officers of the Tennis Club Committee). These members would hold the lease as trustees on behalf of the club members and had a duty to ensure that the terms of the lease, including payment of rent and outgoings, were obeyed. The club’s grounds were sold to the Limited Company for ever, i.e. the land is freehold but subject to provisions which restrict and control the use of the land. The land is, in fact, building land, even though it was only purchased for tennis use. The last lease held by the Club from the Limited Company was dated 6th April 1982. Due to the excellent foresight of your Club Committee and the substantial support and help of Peter Cockhill and John Pollard (of the Limited Company and of the Club), the Club purchased the ground and premises on 25th August 1994. The Trustees appointed to receive the ground and premises on behalf of the Club members were then Barry Davies and Ron Lofthouse. The present trustees are Barry Davies, Geoff Hill, Liz Binns and Chris Silk Courts (picture1) Club Presidents
